A Partnership in Adaptive Sports and Community Engagement

At Telluride Mountain School (TMS), education extends far beyond the classroom. It’s about shaping compassionate, community-oriented, and adventurous students who embrace challenges and make a difference in the world. One of the most powerful experiences that embodies these values is our ongoing partnership with the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program (TASP)—a collaboration that allows our students to step into leadership roles, build empathy, and experience the joy of inclusivity through adaptive skiing and snowboarding.

Recently, our 5th and 6th-grade students had the incredible opportunity to spend the day on the slopes with TASP instructors and guest athletes from Montrose High School. This hands-on experience was not only an unforgettable adventure but also a profound lesson in perseverance, adaptability, and the power of human connection.

A Day of Learning and Inclusion on the Mountain

From the moment our students arrived at the base of Telluride Ski Resort, they were eager to assist, listen, and learn. Guided by expert TASP instructors, our students helped support athletes with disabilities as they navigated the mountain using specialized adaptive equipment. Whether it was assisting with sit-skis, helping tether riders, or simply offering encouragement and high-fives, our students quickly realized that skiing is about more than just the sport—it’s about access, independence, and pushing personal limits.

One of the most inspiring moments came when a Montrose High School athlete, initially hesitant about skiing, gained confidence with the support of a TMS student buddy. By the end of the session, they were carving down the slopes with a huge smile, a testament to the impact of encouragement and teamwork.

Why This Partnership Matters

TASP’s mission is to provide life-changing outdoor experiences for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that everyone has access to the beauty and thrill of the mountains. At TMS, we believe in fostering students who are compassionate, independent, and purpose-driven, and this partnership is a perfect reflection of those values.

By engaging in adaptive sports, our students gain a deeper understanding of resilience, inclusion, and the importance of service. They learn to appreciate different abilities, recognize the power of a positive attitude, and see firsthand how their actions can create meaningful change.

Looking Ahead

The TMS-TASP partnership is one we hold close to our hearts, and we are excited to continue these experiences in the future. Whether through more ski days, volunteer opportunities, or ongoing education about adaptive sports, we are committed to ensuring that our students leave TMS not just as strong academics and athletes, but as kind, thoughtful leaders who make the world a better place.

A huge thank you to TASP, Montrose High School, and all the incredible athletes and instructors who made this day so special. We are honored to be part of this incredible community and look forward to many more days on the mountain together!
